B4Plastics launches world innovation with first biodegradable (drainage) pipe together with Alldrain

March 19, 2025

Belgium-based biotechnology company B4Plastics is taking a revolutionary step in sustainable innovation with the development of programmed biodegradable material for the first biodegradable drainage pipe, ‘Verdiflex’.

BE, Dilsen-Stokkem. Belgium-based biotechnology company B4Plastics is taking a revolutionary step in sustainable innovation with the development of programmed biodegradable material for the first biodegradable drainage pipe, ‘Verdiflex’. Thanks to the HUMICUR® product from their pioneering TriggerPlastics technology, the problem of plastic pipes remaining in the soil forever is being tackled once and for all. In close collaboration with drainage pipes manufacturer Alldrain, B4Plastics has now developed a solution that degrades completely within the timeframe desired by the customer, without leaving harmful residues in the environment!

Sustainable innovation for cleaner soil

A rough estimate shows that there are between 50 and 100 million kilometers of underground pipes worldwide. These range from water pipes to sewer pipes, gas pipelines, telecommunication, and electricity lines.

Traditional (drainage) pipes are made from conventional plastics, which degrade slowly or not at all, contributing to soil contamination and ecological damage. The Verdiflex pipe, on the other hand, installed by Schaafsma and produced by Alldrain, is made from renewable raw materials primarily derived from hemicellulose waste, such as starch from the food industry. This innovative pipe retains its structural strength during the intended usage period and is then naturally broken down by microorganisms in the soil. Depending on environmental factors, the lifespan and degradation period can be adjusted and monitored, ranging from several months to decades.

“Ten years of innovation and R&D at B4Plastics now result in a breakthrough for sustainable infrastructure”
__ Stefaan De Wildeman, CEO B4Plastics

Sustainability as a driving force

Currently, soil drainage pipes are being tested through pilot projects at progressive Dutch companies such as Van Tongeren Watertechniek. These companies are demonstrating their forward-looking vision by contributing to more sustainable water management solutions.
