Background of Dries

Dries works as a materials scientist at B4Plastics.

Q. What sparked your interest in materials science, and how did you get started in this field?

From a young age, I had a strong interest in science, and chemistry was always my favorite. After secondary school, I chose an engineering program, where I quickly discovered that materials science really fascinated me. That’s why I decided to further explore this field in my bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s in Chemical Engineering. After my studies, I pursued a PhD in polymers and 3D printing technology, which eventually led to my current position as a great continuation of my career.

Q. Can you explain your role within the company in a way that even a non-scientist could understand?

It’s a bit difficult to explain my role in simple terms, but I would say that I act as the bridge between chemistry and the final applications of our products. My work involves, among other things, finding the right additives to transform a base raw material into a finished product that is easy to process and meets all the requirements of the specific target market.

Q. What has been one of the most exciting challenges you’ve faced in your work, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge in my work is the variety of applications I deal with. From drainage pipes to trimming lines and fishing nets, each product requires a unique approach. It’s my job to translate chemistry into the final product, which differs in every case. This variety makes my work incredibly interesting and educational

Q. If you could design a material to solve a major societal or personal problem, what would it be, and how would it change people’s lives?

At B4Plastics, we are already working on solving societal challenges by developing sustainable materials. However, the market must be ready to embrace these new solutions, which means companies need to implement changes in their current product range and processes. This requires expertise, time, and investment.

Q. When you’re not working, how do you unwind and recharge? Do your hobbies ever inspire your work?

I love traveling, as it gives me the opportunity to discover new things. This stimulates my curiosity and creativity, which indirectly has a positive impact on my work. Additionally, I enjoy classic hobbies like cooking and baking, and I occasionally go to the gym to relax.

Q. And lastly, if there was a movie about your career in materials science, who would play you and what would the title be?

I don’t watch many movies, but I think it would be fun if our company, B4Plastics, was portrayed in a “The Office”-style mockumentary. Choosing someone to play me is tough, but I think Manu van Acker would be a good choice. I’d find that pretty funny!
